Leerdoelen The students will be able to discuss and summarize the main concepts of modern Solid State Physics (as listed below). The students will be able to identify the relation between the topics studied and their previous physics knowledge (classical mechanics, quantum physics etc..). The students will be able to solve problems of the level of the one proposed in the book by applying basic concepts of solid state physics.

Omschrijving The course aims to introduce students to the main concepts of modern Solid State Physics. It will cover the fundamentals, from crystal structures and diffraction till the nature of the energy bands. The main physical properties of metals, semiconductors as well as the superconductors will be treated quantitatively. Introduction (Chapter 1 Kittel) Crystal structures; Fundamental types of lattices, Simple crystal structures. Diffraction of waves by crystals (Chapter 2 Kittel) (or Chapter 1, Hook and Hall) Reciprocal space and determination of lattice structures (Chapters 5 and 6 Ashcroft & Mermin) Phonons and thermal properties of Crystals (Chapter 4 and 5 Kittel or Chapter 2, Hook and Hall) Free Electron Fermi Gas Model (Chapter 6 Kittel or Chapter 3, Hook and Hall) Electrical Conductivity (Chapter 6 Kittel) Energy bands (Chapter 7 Kittel or Chapter 4, Hook and Hall) Block theorem (Chapter 7 Kittel) Fermi surfaces and metals (Chapter 9 till page 230) Semiconductors (Chapter 8 Kittel or Chapter 5, Hook and Hall) Effective mass Intrinsic and extrinsic semiconductors Semiconductor devices (Slides or Chapter 6, Hook and Hall) Superconductivity in pills (Part of Chapter 10 Kittel (till page 279) and Ashcroft & Mermin) Magnetic properties of materials (Chapter 11 and 12 Kittel)
